Police Lines Attack Leaves at Least 30 Injured

A cultural programme at the Police Lines in Brahmanbaria was disrupted after an altercation over loud music escalated into an attack and subsequent police action, leaving at least 30 people injured.

The incident took place at around 11pm on Tuesday, 18 August, inside the Police Lines in the West Medda area of Brahmanbaria municipality. The programme had been organised by the district police in connection with the visit of the Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Chattogram Range.

According to madrasa students and local residents, loud music was being played during the cultural event. Some madrasa students reportedly approached those involved in the programme and asked them to reduce the volume. What began as a disagreement over the sound level soon developed into a heated argument between police personnel and the students.

The situation deteriorated when more than 100 madrasa students reportedly entered the Police Lines premises and became involved in an attack and vandalism. Police subsequently used batons to bring the situation under control.

At least 20 madrasa students were injured during the police action, according to those familiar with the incident. Several police personnel were also injured during the initial attack. Taken together, the number of injured people was reported to be at least 30.

The confrontation created tension in the area and continued to draw attention late into the night. The situation eventually returned to normal after discussions were held between representatives of the madrasa and the police.

A meeting was held involving Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Shah Md Abdur Rouf, the district council administrator, district BNP General Secretary Md Sirajul Islam and representatives of the madrasa. During the discussions, the madrasa students reportedly demanded that loud music should never again be played at the Police Lines and called for action against those they alleged had assaulted students.

The Superintendent of Police said that if anyone had acted out of excessive enthusiasm or gone beyond what was appropriate, action would be taken in accordance with the circumstances.

The incident has highlighted how a relatively minor dispute over noise can rapidly escalate when tensions rise. The authorities are now expected to assess the events that led to the confrontation and determine whether any further measures are necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
