A Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) stationed at Chunarughat Police Station in Habiganj has been officially withdrawn from his post and attached to the district police lines following the widespread circulation of a video showing him taking a bribe.
The disciplinary action against ASI Atanu Banik was issued on Tuesday afternoon via an administrative order, shortly after video footage detailing the corrupt transaction caused public outrage across social media platforms.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when a local resident, identified as Masud Alam, posted the footage on his Facebook page titled ‘iTV’. The video captures ASI Banik seated near the pond within the premises of Chunarughat Police Station. In the recording, the officer is seen accepting 10,000 BDT in cash from an individual while discussing plans to implicate another person in a criminal case.
The footage quickly went viral, triggering intense criticism and public condemnation regarding law enforcement integrity. As the video gained traction online, senior district police officials intervened, issuing an immediate order by Tuesday afternoon to relieve the officer of his duties at the station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chunarughat Police Station, Mohammad Saiful Islam, confirmed the officer’s withdrawal. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the footage was recorded earlier this year in March. The department has initiated a formal investigation to examine the circumstances surrounding the event, with departmental disciplinary measures scheduled to follow the submission of the official inquiry report.
The scandal has intensified existing public frustration, occurring just twenty-four hours after footage depicting another Assistant Sub-Inspector from the very same police station accepting a bribe surfaced online. The back-to-back exposure of corruption involving officers at Chunarughat Police Station has raised significant concerns among local residents, who are demanding thorough departmental inquiries and accountability to restore public trust in the regional force.
