Popular Mexican TikTok creator César Gastélum was shot dead on Tuesday, 4 August, during a live broadcast outside a fast-food restaurant in the Tres Ríos district of Culiacán, northern Mexico.
Local news reports indicate that Gastélum was filming a TikTok live stream alongside two friends when two armed assailants approached them on a motorcycle. One of the men dismounted and fired multiple rounds at Gastélum at point-blank range before both attackers sped away from the scene. Gastélum died instantly on the pavement from his injuries.
Gastélum, who had amassed over 500,000 followers on TikTok through his comedy sketches and lighthearted content, leaves behind a grief-stricken fanbase. News of his sudden death triggered an outpouring of tributes across social media platforms, with followers expressing shock at the brutal nature of his murder.
Initial police reports revealed that Gastélum and his companions were wearing bright orange jackets and carrying insulated bags commonly used by delivery drivers. This attire initially led responding officers to misidentify the victim as a courier, though investigators later established his true identity.
Police and forensic teams cordoned off the crime scene shortly after the shooting to collect spent bullet casings and examine surrounding CCTV footage. No arrests have been made as law enforcement authorities continue their search for the gunmen.
Targeted attacks on social media influencers during live broadcasts are an increasingly alarming phenomenon in Mexico. Last year, 23-year-old influencer Valeria Márquez was fatally shot inside a beauty salon while streaming live on TikTok.
Authorities noted that it remains unclear whether Gastélum had received prior death threats. His public profiles frequently featured photographs documenting international travel, nightlife events, and high-end luxury vehicles.
Investigators have drawn attention to a recent social media post by Gastélum, which showed him posing beside the grave of slain influencer Leobardo Aispuro. Known online as ‘El Gordo Peruci’, Aispuro was shot dead in December 2024 in an attack linked by police to internal feuds within the Sinaloa Cartel.
The city of Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa state, has experienced a sharp escalation in gang violence since September 2024 due to an ongoing territorial conflict between two rival cartel factions, ‘Los Chapitos’ and ‘La Mayiza’. Gastélum’s murder underscores the persistent security risks facing residents and public figures amidst the ongoing violence in the region.
