An American freelance journalist has been abducted in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, prompting a large-scale security operation across the city. Iraqi authorities confirmed that the incident took place on Tuesday, with search efforts ongoing to locate and safely recover the victim.
According to two Iraqi police officers, the journalist was forcibly taken by unidentified individuals in plain clothes who arrived in a vehicle and bundled her away in a coordinated manner. Security forces believe the abductors fled towards eastern Baghdad, where intensified operations and checkpoints have since been established.
The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has confirmed the kidnapping of a female journalist, although it initially withheld details regarding her nationality. The ministry stated that one suspect has already been arrested in connection with the case, while investigations continue to identify additional individuals involved and to determine the motive behind the abduction.
Subsequently, unnamed Iraqi security officials identified the victim as Shelley Kittleson, an American freelance journalist based in Rome. She is known for her extensive reporting on conflicts and political developments across the Middle East and has contributed to several international outlets, including Al-Monitor.
The United States Department of State confirmed awareness of the incident, noting that it is in close coordination with Iraqi authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to support efforts aimed at securing her release. A senior official from the department’s Bureau of Global Public Affairs stated on social media that prior risk advisories had been issued concerning travel to Iraq, reiterating longstanding warnings to American citizens against visiting the country due to security concerns.
Although the official did not name the journalist directly, the statement emphasised that relevant warnings had been provided in advance and that diplomatic channels remain active in managing the case. The official also reiterated that efforts are ongoing to ensure the swift and safe return of the abducted journalist.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the fragile security environment in parts of Iraq, particularly for foreign journalists and aid workers who continue to operate in high-risk areas. While Iraq has experienced relative stabilisation in certain regions in recent years, sporadic kidnappings and targeted attacks remain a concern, particularly in and around Baghdad.
Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements to reconstruct the movements of the suspects. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the abduction was financially motivated, politically driven, or linked to organised armed groups operating in the region.

This is not the first time foreign nationals have been targeted in Iraq. In previous years, kidnappings involving academics, journalists, and aid workers have underscored persistent security vulnerabilities despite government efforts to improve stability. One notable case involved the abduction of a foreign researcher in 2023, who was eventually released after an extended period in captivity in 2025.
The latest incident is expected to prompt renewed security warnings from Western governments and may further discourage independent reporting in volatile regions. For now, Iraqi and American authorities continue joint efforts to locate the journalist and bring those responsible to justice.
