New Zealand’s women’s cricket team produced a sensational display on Wednesday, achieving the highest successful run chase in Women’s One Day International (WODI) history. Captain Amelia Kerr’s outstanding innings powered the Kiwis past South Africa, chasing a daunting target of 347 runs at Wellington’s Basin Reserve.

Batting first, South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt, posted a formidable 346 for six in their 50 overs. Aneke Bash top-scored with a personal best of 91 off 90 balls, including 12 boundaries. Wolvaardt contributed 69, Chloe Tryon 52, and Suné Luus 40, ensuring the Proteas set a total that would test any chasing side.

Chasing this record-breaking target, New Zealand faced immense pressure. The previous highest successful chase in women’s ODIs stood at 339 runs, making the task monumental. However, Kerr’s masterful innings of 179 not out from 139 balls, featuring 23 fours and a six, saw the Kiwis secure victory with two balls and two wickets to spare. She received crucial support from Isabella Gez, who scored a brisk 68 off 48 deliveries, anchoring the innings when wickets fell at the other end.

While Kerr did not take wickets, her dominance with the bat proved decisive. Bree Lough claimed three wickets for New Zealand, while Ayabonga Khaka accounted for three for South Africa.

Kerr also reached a personal milestone. Her 179 not out ranks as the seventh-highest individual score in WODIs. She already holds the record for the highest individual score, having scored 232 against Ireland in 2018, surpassing Belinda Clark’s 229-run innings that had stood for 21 years.

The victory was crucial for New Zealand, who had lost the first match of the series. Needing a win to keep the series alive, Kerr’s brilliance ensured not just a victory but a historic landmark in women’s cricket. This match underlines the increasing competitiveness and depth in the women’s game, with New Zealand now holding the record for the highest successful chase in WODIs.
