With less than two and a half months to go, the stage is set for the FIFA Football World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament’s final qualification play-offs concluded over the past two days, confirming the last six teams to join the main event.
The headline story comes from Asia: Iraq secured the 48th and final spot in the World Cup after a dramatic 2–1 victory over Bolivia, marking their return to the tournament after a 40-year absence.
Earlier on Tuesday night, play-offs in Mexico and Europe had already delivered five qualifiers: Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Sweden, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The intercontinental play-off final then produced a historic moment for Iraq while heartbreakingly ending Bolivia’s campaign. Among the notable absentees was four-time world champion Italy, failing to qualify for the third consecutive tournament.
Italy’s elimination came in a tense penalty shootout against Bosnia-Herzegovina. After leading 1–0 at half-time, Italy conceded an equaliser in the second half, taking the match to extra time and eventually a tie-breaker. Bosnia scored on their first attempt, while Italy’s Pio Esposito missed. Subsequent penalties saw Bosnia convert again, sealing a 4–1 shootout victory and securing their World Cup berth.
Sweden also returned to the World Cup stage after defeating Poland 3–2, while Turkey claimed a 1–0 win over Kosovo to qualify for the first time in 24 years. The Czech Republic prevailed in a penalty shootout against Denmark, winning 3–1 after a 2–2 draw in normal time, securing their first World Cup appearance in 20 years. The Democratic Republic of the Congo qualified after defeating Jamaica 1–0, returning to the tournament after 52 years.
The 2026 World Cup, taking place from 11 June to 19 July, will feature 48 teams competing in a record 104 matches across three host nations.
