KATHMANDU, 10 April 2025 — Renowned mountaineer Lakpa Sherpa has once again etched his name in climbing history by successfully summiting Mt Makalu (8,485 metres) for the eighth time. Leading the rope-fixing team to the peak, he officially opened the route to the world's fifth-highest peak for the upcoming 2025 spring season.

A Historic Climb

Lakpa Sherpa and his team reached the summit at approximately 10:20 AM on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the 2025 expedition. Kipa Sherpa, a fellow climber, also reached the top alongside the team, as confirmed by Seven Summit Treks (SST), the trekking company overseeing the expedition.

This marks not only the eighth summit for Lakpa Sherpa but also the first summit of the season for Mt Makalu, signalling the beginning of a busy climbing season on the mountain.

Route Now Open for Climbers

With the route to Makalu now officially opened, climbers who have completed their acclimatization rotations are preparing for their summit bids. In addition, several other climbers are on their way to base camp to begin their preparations for the ascent.

2025 Spring Season 8,000-Metre Summits

Makalu becomes the fifth 8,000-metre peak to be successfully scaled during the spring season. The peaks climbed so far include:
