An incident at a police station in Palashbari Upazila has led to the filing of a case against eight local leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, after allegations that they assaulted multiple police officers, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC), inside the station premises.
According to police accounts, the confrontation occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday (25 March) at the Palashbari Police Station. Earlier, a group of individuals reportedly entered the station around 9:30 p.m. demanding that police intervene in a dispute concerning a municipally owned shop in the Kalibari market area. The dispute centred on the unlocking or sealing of a shop under the ownership of the municipal authority.
Police stated that when the Officer-in-Charge, Sarwar Alam, did not comply with their demand, the group became agitated. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in physical altercations inside the station. Several officers, including Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin, were allegedly attacked.
Authorities confirmed that a total of eight police personnel were injured in the incident. Following the unrest, additional police forces were deployed from nearby areas to bring the situation under control.
A case was subsequently filed by Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin, naming eight leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and several unidentified individuals. Investigators have indicated that legal action is underway and arrests may follow as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Police Superintendency officials from the Gaibandha District confirmed that the incident stemmed from a dispute over sealing a shop at Kalibari market, which reportedly triggered the confrontation at the station.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Rashidul Bari stated that a group led by youth wing figure Mahmudul Hasan Palash entered the station and demanded immediate action from the police. When the request was declined, tensions escalated into violence.
Following the incident, local party representatives, including Abu Bakkar Siddique, visited the police station. He stated that the party would review CCTV footage and take organisational action if any members were found involved.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and security measures have been strengthened in and around the station to prevent further unrest.
