A tragic road accident in the early hours of Thursday claimed the life of a 50-year-old woman after she was run over by a speeding passenger bus while crossing a busy highway in Fatullah, Narayanganj.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:30am in front of the Fatullah Ria Gopal Stadium along the Dhaka–Narayanganj Link Road, one of the busiest commuter routes connecting the capital with surrounding industrial zones.
The deceased, identified as Lata Rani Mondal, was a resident of the Pilkuni area of Fatullah and the wife of Sukh Ranjan Mondal. She was reportedly crossing the road when the fatal collision took place.
According to eyewitness accounts, Lata Rani was attempting to cross the highway during the early morning rush when a high-speed passenger bus operated by Shyamoli Paribahan struck her violently. The impact threw her onto the road, after which the bus also collided with a stationary covered van positioned ahead.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, noting that the front portion and windows of the bus were severely damaged due to the secondary collision. Bystanders immediately rushed to her aid and transported her in critical condition to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where attending physicians declared her dead upon arrival.
Officials from Fatullah Model Police Station confirmed that law enforcement personnel were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving reports of the accident. The bus involved in the collision was seized for investigation, and efforts are underway to determine the circumstances that led to the incident, including possible speeding or negligence.
Authorities stated that legal procedures have been initiated and an inquiry is ongoing.
