A quiet residential neighbourhood in Rangpur has been plunged into grief following the gruesome murder of four members of the same family. Amid the shock and disbelief in the Machhuapara area, a deeply harrowing detail has surfaced involving an undelivered parcel intended for one of the victims, twenty-three-year-old Agami Chakraborty.
The package, sent via Steadfast Courier, arrived at the Chakraborty residence shortly after the killings took place. When the delivery driver reached the doorstep, he was met with the grim reality that the recipient and her entire household were no longer alive. Confronted with the tragedy, the courier representative logged an unusual and devastating status update on the logistics network’s internal portal: “Customer murdered with family.”
The courier firm’s chief executive officer, KM Ridwanul Bari Zion, later shared the heart-wrenching development on social media, expressing profound sorrow over the incident and praying for the departed souls.
The victims have been identified as Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, a widely respected retired schoolteacher from Rangpur Zilla School; his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50; their daughter Agami Chakraborty, 23; and their twelve-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty. Agami, who had recently completed her postgraduate studies at Carmichael College, was preparing for an upcoming chapter in her life. Her wedding had recently been finalised. Only days prior to the tragedy, her fiancé, Odit Kar, had sent her an affectionate and reassuring message: “Do not worry, Agami. I was with you, I am with you, and I will always be with you.”
Local police recovered the four bodies on the night of Saturday, 22 August, around half past eleven. Officers broke into the locked residence after relatives raised the alarm, noting that all communication with the family had abruptly ceased since midnight on Thursday.
According to investigative findings, the brutal incident unfolded late on Thursday evening. The suspects, identified as Siddhartha Das, 19, and Mugdha Das, 23, had scaled the roof of the Chakraborty residence from an adjacent building under construction to consume illicit methamphetamine pills, locally known as yaba.
When Ganapati Chakraborty noticed the trespassers and attempted to intervene, an altercation ensued. The two youths overpowered the retired schoolteacher and strangled him using a traditional cotton towel (gamcha). Fearing exposure and retaliation, the assailants proceeded to eliminate the remaining witnesses in the house, systematically suffocating Pritilata, Agami, and young Priyam in the same violent manner.
Law enforcement authorities swiftly apprehended both suspects following the discovery of the bodies. Siddhartha and Mugdha were produced before the local judicial magistrate, where they provided confessional statements detailing the crime under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Both individuals have since been remanded in judicial custody as the formal investigation continues.
