Remanded Detainee Dies at Dhaka Medical College Hospital

A twenty-five-year-old prisoner from Narayanganj District Jail has died whilst undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The deceased, identified as Mohammad Sajib Ahmed, passed away on Wednesday evening, 7 October, following a prolonged period of illness behind bars.

The death was formally confirmed by Abdul Kuddus, the Superintendent of Narayanganj District Jail. Sajib was the son of Mohammad Sanaullah and resided in the Maijpara area, situated within Ward No. 2 of the Narayanganj City Corporation.

According to the correctional authorities, Sajib had been suffering from deteriorating health for several weeks and was initially managed at the infirmary inside the Narayanganj District Jail. As his physical condition grew significantly worse on Saturday, 3 October, prison officials arranged for his immediate transfer to the Khanpur 300-Bed Hospital in Narayanganj. Upon preliminary evaluation, attending medical personnel determined that his condition required specialized emergency care, prompting an urgent transfer to DMCH in the capital, where he ultimately succumbed to his ailments.

Elaborating on the medical circumstances leading to Sajib’s death, Jail Superintendent Abdul Kuddus noted that the deceased suffered from severe obesity along with acute hypertension. Complications arising from these chronic health conditions contributed to his sudden physical decline during custody.

Sajib had been held on remand following his arrest by the Siddhirganj Police Station on 12 July. Law enforcement officers took him into custody during an alleged robbery preparation, confiscating a foreign-made revolver and live ammunition from his possession. Subsequently produced before a local court, he was remanded to judicial custody pending trial. Police records indicate that Sajib was named as an accused in multiple pending criminal cases across the district prior to his detention.

Custodial deaths in Bangladesh remain under scrutiny from judicial bodies and human rights advocates, who routinely call for thorough post-mortem examinations and independent inquiries to verify the precise medical cause of death and ensure that proper standard operating procedures were observed during detention and medical referral.
