Professor Siddika Kabir, a pioneering nutritionist, educator, and culinary author, remains one of Bangladesh’s most influential figures in the fields of nutrition, health, and family welfare. Renowned for her ability to present complex scientific concepts in an accessible and practical manner, she transformed the understanding of diet, wellness, and household management for generations. Her cookbooks and nutrition guides, widely used across Bangladeshi homes, cemented her popularity among the general public, making her a household name.
Born on 7 May 1935 in Mokim Bazaar, Old Dhaka, Professor Kabir was raised in a highly educated and culturally enriched environment. Her father, Maulvi Ahmedullah, was among the first graduates of the Science Faculty at Dhaka University and later served as a science teacher at Dhaka Collegiate School. Her mother, Syeda Hasina Khatun, was a devoted homemaker. The intellectual and disciplined environment of her upbringing deeply influenced her worldview and lifelong commitment to education and public service.
In November 1972, she married banker Syed Ali Kabir, forming a partnership that would support her professional and social contributions.
Professor Kabir’s educational journey began at Eden College, where she excelled in the Science Faculty and passed her Intermediate examinations with first-class honours. She then enrolled in Dhaka University’s Department of Mathematics, earning her undergraduate degree. During her first year, she also took on a part-time role as an announcer at the then Pakistan Radio (now Bangladesh Betar), showcasing her versatile talents.
Following her graduation, she began teaching at Viqarunnisa Noon School and later became a lecturer in mathematics at Eden College. Awarded a Ford Foundation scholarship, she pursued higher studies in the United States and in 1963 received a Master’s degree in Food and Nutrition Science from Oklahoma State University. Upon her return to Bangladesh, she dedicated her knowledge and expertise to improving public health and nutrition.
She subsequently joined Azimpur College of Home Economics as an assistant professor and served there until her retirement in 1993. Beyond academia, Professor Kabir played a vital role in promoting women’s health, nutrition awareness, and family well-being, leaving an enduring impact on society.
Professor Siddika Kabir passed away on 31 January 2012 at Square Hospital, Dhaka. Her legacy, through her writings, teaching, and advocacy, continues to illuminate the lives of countless Bangladeshis. Her contributions remain a guiding light in the fields of nutrition, education, and public health.
