Well-known sports journalist and media personality Zahir Bhuiya has died in a road accident. On Sunday (30 November), he was present at the election event of the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity. In the afternoon, a sudden silence fell over the venue as news spread of his untimely death, sending a wave of grief across the journalism and sports communities.

Zahir Bhuiya, 52, lost control of his motorcycle on the Khilgaon flyover in Dhaka and sustained critical injuries. He was a sports reporter for the newspaper Dainik Vorer Pata.

He was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 4:45 pm but was declared dead by attending doctors.

Zahir Uddin Bhuiya was the son of Shamsuddin Bhuiya from Chapitala village in Muradnagar, Comilla. He lived with his family in the middle Basabo area under Khilgaon police jurisdiction. He is survived by a son and two daughters.

His son, Rakib Bhuiya Tamim, said that his father was riding his motorcycle on the Khilgaon flyover at around 3:45 pm when he collided with an unknown vehicle, lost control, and was severely injured. He was first taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital and then to DMCH for advanced treatment, where doctors declared him dead.

Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police camp, said that the injured journalist was brought to the hospital from Khilgaon flyover and declared dead by the attending physicians. The body has been kept in the emergency department morgue, and the matter has been reported to the relevant police station.

Zahir Bhuiya had been involved in sports journalism for nearly two decades. He previously worked at Dainik Manobzamin and primarily covered cricket, though he also reported on football and other sports. His sudden passing has cast a shadow of grief over both the sports community and the media.
