Residents in Keraniganj’s Doleshwar Live in Constant Fear Amid Allegations of Land Grabbing and Extortion

Despite several months having passed since allegations of land grabbing, forcible takeover of business establishments, and extortion surfaced against several leaders and activists associated with the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in the Doleshwar area of Konda Union, Keraniganj, local residents continue to live in constant fear and uncertainty.

The incidents of land grabbing and extortion in Keraniganj’s Doleshwar area began following the political transition on 5 August 2024. An on-the-ground investigation revealed that land grabbing, forcible takeover of businesses, and systematic extortion have been taking place for months under the leadership of four key figures: Jubo Dal leader Simon, Jubo Dal leader Tanvir, Bappi, and BNP leader Ruman. Locals report that the situation remains unchanged despite the passage of time.

Simon, son of Niamat Ullah from Doleshwar village, faces multiple allegations, including operating a lawsuit-filing racket, intimidation, forcible land seizure, and extortion. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, local residents stated that to exert influence, he attempts to establish authority in the area by variously claiming to be a Jubo Dal leader, a close associate of top BNP leaders, or a coordinator. He is also accused of threatening local administration officials.

Tanvir, a resident of Doleshwar West Para, is accused of leading door-to-door looting and intimidation across Wards 1, 2, and 3 of Konda Union starting from the afternoon of 5 August 2024. Residents confirm that these activities continue unabated months later.

Ruman, son of the late Kader Miah from Doleshwar Middle Para, reportedly returned to the country after spending a long time abroad following 5 August and began establishing dominance in the area. Locals claim that his primary activities currently involve land grabbing, extortion, and harassing ordinary citizens.

Under the leadership of these four individuals, a market owned by Khairuzzaman Raja Miah located near the Buriganga riverbank in Konda Union was forcibly seized several months ago. According to allegations, the occupiers claimed ownership of the market and erected a signboard on the premises. A video of the incident subsequently went viral on social media. The footage shows the occupiers chanting ‘Allahu Akbar’ after placing the signboard. The board read: “Sheikh Ronnu Majhi, i.e., possession claimed on behalf of the heirs of Ronnu Bepari.” Local sources claim that Jubo Dal leader Simon, Jubo Dal leader Tanvir, Bappi, and BNP leader Ruman directly led this takeover operation.

Dipu, a resident of Doleshwar Kasaibari who is known as the local Shramik Dal president, also faces multiple allegations. Locals claim he is involved in seizing land, drug trafficking, and controlling the waste management business in the Bashundhara area. They further allege that he has been operating an influential syndicate in the region for a long time through these activities.

Locals express frustration that no fair investigation or remedy has taken place despite months having elapsed. Instead, their fear grows day by day. Residents worry that such incidents of illegal occupation and extortion could escalate further under political shelter and patronage. They continue to demand immediate administrative intervention, an impartial investigation, and lawful action against those responsible.
