Rohit Sharma Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s 22-Year-Old ODI Record

Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma missed out on a deserving century by just eight runs in the third One-Day International against the West Indies in Chandigarh, yet his brilliant knock etched his name permanently into cricket history. The elegant opening batsman scored 92 off 85 balls, hitting ten boundaries and three towering sixes, before missing out on three figures.
During this fluid innings, Rohit achieved the landmark of 10,000 One-Day International runs as an opener, becoming the fastest batsman in cricket history to reach the milestone. In doing so, he eclipsed a 22-year-old record previously held by the legendary ‘Little Master’, Sachin Tendulkar.
Rohit reached the 10,000-run milestone as an opener in just 202 matches, comfortably surpassing Tendulkar, who took 214 matches to reach the same figure. By completing the feat in 12 fewer matches than Tendulkar, Rohit established a fresh benchmark in international white-ball cricket.
The achievement places Rohit in an elite club as only the fourth opening batsman in ODI history to accumulate 10,000 runs. Prior to Rohit, the short list comprised Sachin Tendulkar, West Indian power-hitter Chris Gayle, and Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya. Tendulkar still leads the overall tally with 15,310 runs from 340 innings, followed by Jayasuriya with 12,740 runs across 383 innings, and Gayle with 10,179 runs from 274 innings.
Rohit’s 92 provided a strong foundation for India alongside KL Rahul, who compiled an unbeaten 129 off just 87 deliveries. Their partnership propelled India to a formidable total of 351 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs on Saturday.
Despite India’s imposing target, the West Indies launched a dramatic run chase, led by an extraordinary innings from captain Shai Hope. Hope struck a magnificent 162 off 143 balls, embellished with 17 boundaries and three sixes, guiding his side to a five-wicket victory with 10 balls to spare.
The successful pursuit marked the highest run chase in West Indies ODI history, eclipsing their previous record of 327 against Ireland set in 2019. Though Hope stole the match honors, Rohit’s record-breaking feat remains the defining historic moment of the contest.
