The submission of the investigation report in the much-discussed murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi has been postponed for the 111th time.
A court has set 15 October as the next date for submitting the report. The latest delay came on Monday, when the case was scheduled for a progress report from the investigation agency. However, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), which has been responsible for investigating the case, failed to submit the report on the scheduled date. The court subsequently fixed a new deadline.
The prolonged delay has once again drawn attention to one of Bangladesh’s most closely followed unsolved murder cases, which has remained unresolved for more than a decade. Despite repeated extensions, investigators have yet to submit a final report outlining the findings of the probe.
The case involves eight accused individuals, including Tanvir Rahman, a friend of Runi. The investigation has gone through several stages since the killings, with authorities repeatedly seeking additional time to complete the inquiry.
Sagar Sarwar, the news editor of Machranga Television, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were found murdered at their rented residence in West Rajabazar, Dhaka, on the night of 11 February 2012. The brutal killings shocked the country’s media community and triggered widespread public concern over the safety of journalists and the pace of justice.
Following the murders, law enforcement authorities launched investigations, but the case has remained pending as the report submission date has been extended repeatedly. Over the years, different investigative developments have been reported, yet a conclusive outcome has not been presented before the court.
The repeated postponements have kept the families of the victims waiting for answers and have continued to fuel public interest in the case. The latest extension means the investigation will remain open until at least the newly scheduled date in October, when the authorities are expected to provide an update on their progress.
