Salahuddin to Lead BCB High Performance Unit

Mohammad Salahuddin, the Senior Assistant Coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team, is set to transition into a new role as the Head Coach of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) High Performance (HP) unit. His final assignment with the senior national squad will be the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to commence on 8 May.

Strategic Transition and Rationale

The decision for this structural shift originated from discussions between the BCB and Salahuddin. Following a meeting with BCB President Tamim Iqbal, Salahuddin expressed his belief that his expertise would be more effectively utilised in developing the nation’s emerging talent rather than continuing with the senior side.

Salahuddin’s tenure as Senior Assistant Coach began in November 2024. While his current contract with the BCB remains valid until the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, his primary focus will now pivot from immediate international fixtures to the long-term cultivation of the cricket pipeline. David Hemp, the incumbent HP Head Coach, is expected to be reassigned to a different role within the board’s coaching department.

Objectives for the High Performance Unit

In a statement made at the BCB office in Mirpur, Salahuddin outlined his vision for the HP unit. He emphasised that preparing players for the rigours of international cricket involves more than technical drills; it requires a comprehensive overhaul of their cricketing philosophy and lifestyle.

Having spent the last 18 months embedded within the national team, Salahuddin has identified specific systemic gaps. One primary concern is the lack of reliable lower-order all-rounders in limited-overs cricket—players capable of bowling effectively and batting with composure at positions seven or eight. He intends to make the identification and grooming of such specialists a priority during his tenure at the HP unit.

Restructuring of the Development Pathway

The BCB is also implementing a significant overhaul of its player development hierarchy. The existing structure—comprising Under-19, High Performance, Bangladesh Tigers, and the National Team—will be modified. The ‘Bangladesh Tigers’ programme is to be discontinued and replaced by an Under-23 team, designed to serve as a vital bridge between youth cricket and the senior international stage.

Furthermore, Salahuddin intends to move away from short-term developmental camps. His plan involves a year-round operational cycle for the HP unit, ensuring that players receive continuous specialised training. This facility will also be available to national team players who may require technical refinement or specialized practice.

Future Outlook

By shifting Salahuddin to the HP unit, the BCB aims to synchronise the development of young players with the specific needs of the national team. Salahuddin noted that his experience with the senior team has provided him with a clear blueprint of the “standard” required at the highest level, which he now intends to instil in the next generation of Bangladeshi cricketers.
