Secret Service Agent Who Shielded Kennedy During Assassination Dies at 93

WASHINGTON, Feb 25, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Clint Hill, the Secret Service agent who famously leaped onto President John F. Kennedy’s limousine in a desperate attempt to shield him from an assassin’s bullets, has passed away at the age of 93.

The U.S. Secret Service confirmed his death at his home in California, honoring his unwavering dedication and exceptional service to the Kennedy family and four other U.S. presidents.

A Defining Moment in American History

On November 22, 1963, Hill was part of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s security detail in Dallas, Texas, when Lee Harvey Oswald opened fire on the president’s open-top vehicle. Traveling in a car just behind Kennedy’s motorcade, Hill reacted instantly, lunging onto the back of the presidential limousine to protect the First Couple.

“If I had reacted just a little bit quicker,” he later reflected in an interview with 60 Minutes, “I’ll live with that to my grave.”

A now-iconic photograph captured the tragic moment, showing Hill clambering onto the vehicle’s trunk as bullets struck the president. He remained on the car, shielding both Kennedy and Jacqueline, as the motorcade raced to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where the president was later pronounced dead.

A Lifetime of Service

Following the assassination, Hill continued to serve with distinction but retired from the Secret Service at age 43, deeply affected by the trauma of that day. He later wrote several books about his experiences, including “Five Days in November”, recounting the events surrounding Kennedy’s death, which he described as being “seared into my mind and soul.”

“In the blink of an eye, everything changed,” he wrote. “Those days remain the defining period of my life.”

His book “Five Presidents” detailed his career protecting five U.S. presidents: Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford.

A Lasting Legacy

Hill’s actions on that fateful day in Dallas remain a powerful testament to the bravery and dedication of Secret Service agents. Though he spent much of his life haunted by thoughts of what more he could have done, the nation remembers him as a hero who acted selflessly in one of America’s darkest moments.
