Secret Underground Tunnel Discovered and Demolished in Lakshmipur

A sophisticated underground tunnel, equipped with furniture and concealed entry points, has been discovered in a garden in Lakshmipur. The structure, located in West Lakshmipur village under the Dalal Bazar Union of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila, was reportedly used as a clandestine site for illicit activities. Following public outcry and a police investigation, the tunnel was demolished on Thursday to prevent further misuse.

Discovery and Structural Details

The tunnel was strategically excavated within a garden adjacent to a derelict ancestral estate (Zemindar house). To maintain secrecy, the entrance was meticulously camouflaged with bamboo poles and tree branches, making it nearly invisible to passersby. Despite its external concealment, the interior featured functional amenities, including a set of stairs for access and bedding materials such as pillows and mattresses.

The dimensions of the subterranean chamber allowed for the simultaneous occupancy of three to four individuals. The discovery came to light after a video documenting the interior of the tunnel was circulated on the social media platform Facebook, triggering widespread local concern and prompting intervention by both residents and law enforcement.

Allegations of Illicit Activity

Local residents have alleged that the site served as a hidden sanctuary for the consumption and distribution of narcotics. According to community members, a local youth identified as Sujan Saha, along with several associates, was responsible for the construction and maintenance of the facility. Since the discovery gained public attention, Mr Saha has reportedly gone into hiding to avoid legal repercussions.

Upon inquiry, the wife of Sujan Saha confirmed that her husband had indeed constructed the tunnel. However, she maintained that she possessed no knowledge regarding whether the site was utilised for drug-related activities.

Official Responses

Nuzrul Islam, the Chairman of the Dalal Bazar Union Parishad, confirmed that he was briefed by local residents regarding the tunnel’s existence. He stated that the individual behind the construction was known to be a frequent drug user and that the underground structure was specifically designed to facilitate drug consumption away from public view.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Thana, Mohammed Wahid Parvez, stated that police personnel visited the site following the reports to verify the structure’s existence. He noted that the local community had lodged formal complaints regarding the tunnel being a hub for narcotics. Consequently, the authorities oversaw the demolition of the tunnel to eliminate the risk of continued criminal activity in the area. Law enforcement officials have indicated that they are monitoring the situation as the investigation continues.
