In a significant crackdown on illicit fuel trading, police in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila apprehended seven individuals transporting nearly three thousand litres of petrol intended for black-market sale. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at Kalibari Bazar, drawing the attention of local residents and authorities alike.
According to local sources, late Tuesday night, a pickup truck, a van, and an auto-rickshaw were seen moving fifteen drums of petrol through the area. Suspicious of the unusual convoy, residents intervened, stopping the vehicles and conducting a preliminary search. Their vigilance led to the discovery of approximately 2,970 litres of petrol, and the subsequent detention of the seven suspects. The matter was reported to the police early Wednesday, who promptly took the individuals into custody.

Jamalpur Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman stated, “The local community took swift action to detain these individuals before informing the authorities. Our officers then transported the suspects to the police station and seized the petrol. Preparations are underway to lodge a formal case.”
This operation reflects a rising trend in the illicit fuel trade across the region. Law enforcement officials emphasised that such interventions are vital to curbing black-market activities, which often create artificial shortages and destabilise local markets. The police further indicated that investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the petrol and uncover the supply network behind this illegal operation.
Community members expressed their approval of the swift action, highlighting the importance of vigilance and cooperation with authorities to maintain law and order. Local police confirmed that continuous monitoring and surprise inspections will be intensified to prevent similar incidents in the future.
