Shaheed Minar Flower Tribute Sparks Political Clash

In the early hours of 21 February, during the observance of International Mother Language and Shaheed Day, Barisal-2 (encompassing parts of Sarail, Ashuganj, and Bijoynagar) Member of Parliament, Barrister Rumin Farhana, faced a confrontation while attempting to lay flowers at the central Shaheed Minar. The incident occurred around midnight in the Sarail Upazila Shaheed Minar premises, triggering a wave of political unrest and public concern.

According to police and eyewitness reports, Barrister Farhana arrived at the monument at approximately 11:50 p.m., accompanied by several hundred supporters. Supporters greeted her with applause and political slogans. At 12:01 a.m., as she approached the Minar to lay her floral tribute, former district BNP secretary and current party member Anwar Hossain Master arrived on the scene. The sudden convergence of both sides escalated tensions, resulting in scuffles in which some individuals climbed onto the Minar, removed flowers, and shouted slogans.

Barrister Farhana commented on the confrontation, stating, “Certain BNP leaders and activists launched an attack on my supporters, attempting to push me aside. Although they have returned to power after 17 years, if they cannot manage their local cadre, the consequences could be severe. As a new government, I hope they will take swift action against their unruly party members.”

In response to the incident, Farhana’s supporters blocked the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway at Shahbazpur around 12:30 a.m., setting fire to tyres and standing in protest with sticks, disrupting traffic for nearly an hour. Local police intervened around 1:00 a.m., promising lawful action, which led to the dispersal of the blockade.
