Shoriful’s Six-Wicket Spell Revives Bangladesh in Mackay Test

Left-arm pace bowler Shoriful Islam has produced a devastating spell of bowling to haul Bangladesh back into contention during the Mackay Test against Australia. After a dismal batting display left the tourists reeling on the opening day, Shoriful’s exceptional figures of six wickets have completely disrupted the Australian innings.

The contest had begun in the worst possible fashion for Bangladesh, whose first innings folded for a meagre 64 runs under relentless pressure from the home side’s seamers. Facing a modest target, Australia initially stumbled to 41 for the loss of three wickets as Matt Renshaw, Travis Head, and Marnus Labuschagne departed cheaply. However, experienced batsman Steven Smith and Cameron Green temporarily steadied the ship, forging a resilient 77-run partnership to stretch the hosts’ advantage.

The complexion of the match shifted dramatically when Shoriful tore through the middle and lower order. The Australian innings suffered a steep collapse, losing five wickets for the addition of just 30 runs. Steven Smith fell for a hard-fought 42, whilst Alex Carey managed five and Mitchell Starc contributed a single run. The lower order offered little resistance, with both Beau Webster and captain Pat Cummins dismissed without scoring, mirroring Starc’s earlier heroics against the Bangladeshi top order.

By removing Starc, Shoriful secured his maiden five-wicket haul in international cricket before swiftly claiming his sixth victim to cap a stellar personal performance. As the match approached a tense phase of the afternoon session, Australia stood at 151 for the loss of eight wickets after 35 overs. This gave the home side a lead of 87 runs, keeping the fixture finely balanced.

With only two wickets remaining, the primary objective for the crease-occupying Australian batsmen is to stretch their lead as far as possible. Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi camp remains eager to polish off the tail quickly, ensuring the target stays within manageable limits ahead of their second turn with the bat.
