Police have arrested six leaders affiliated with the Awami League, Jubo League and Krishak League in separate operations across three upazilas of Bogura, as part of ongoing action against individuals accused in various criminal cases. Following the completion of legal formalities, all six were produced before a court on Thursday (30 July), which ordered that they be sent to Bogura District Jail.
The arrests were carried out on Wednesday (29 July) night from the suspects’ respective residences and surrounding areas. According to police, the group comprises two Awami League leaders, two Jubo League leaders and two Krishak League leaders, all of whom are facing allegations in separate cases involving sabotage, explosives, assault and violence.
In Sherpur upazila, Sub-Inspector Jahidul Islam of Sherpur Police Station said Abdul Hannan, 48, General Secretary of the Mirzapur Union Awami League, was arrested at around 6:00 pm from the Mirzapur Bazar area following a tip-off. About an hour and a half later, police arrested Tofazzal Hossain, 55, President of the Shahbandegi Union Krishak League, from the Kanaikandar area during the same operation.
Police stated that Abdul Hannan is a named accused in a case filed at Sherpur Police Station on 28 September 2024. Investigators later identified evidence linking Tofazzal Hossain to the same case, after which he was formally included as an accused during the course of the investigation.
In a separate operation in Sonatala upazila, Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain said police arrested Moniruzzaman Thandu, a member of the upazila Jubo League, from his home in Chhoto Balua village under Balua Union at approximately 1:45 am on Wednesday night. He is the son of the late Abul Sarkar. According to police, he is an accused in a case involving allegations of a crude bomb explosion and the assault of a BNP activist. After his arrest, he was produced before the court on Thursday upon completion of the required legal procedures.
Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge Atikul Islam of Dhunat Police Station said police conducted another overnight operation in connection with two separate sabotage cases, leading to the arrest of three more political leaders.
Those arrested were identified as Arifur Rahman Dulal, 52, Labour Affairs Secretary of the Goshaibari Union Awami League; Suman, 36, Joint General Secretary of the Dhunat Municipal Jubo League; and Sohel Talukdar, 42, General Secretary of the Choukibari Union Krishak League.
Police said all six individuals face cases filed on allegations including sabotage, offences under explosives laws, assault and acts of violence. Following their appearance before the court on Thursday, the judge ordered that they be remanded to Bogura District Jail pending further legal proceedings.
Law enforcement officials said the arrests were made as part of ongoing operations to execute warrants and apprehend individuals wanted in connection with criminal investigations. The authorities added that legal action in each case will continue in accordance with the progress of the investigations and decisions of the courts.
