A tense confrontation erupted in Ramganj, Lakshmipur, on Tuesday morning after a stolen cow was discovered inside a barn belonging to Delwar Hossain, a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The incident unfolded in Tiori village, situated within Ward No. 3 of Bholakot Union. Local residents gathered outside the politician’s home shortly after word spread that the missing livestock had been spotted on his property, prompting the dispatch of law enforcement officers to restore order and secure the animal.
The bovine, belonging to a local day labourer, had been reported missing on the night of 10 September from the neighbouring village of Nolchora. Following its disappearance, the owner’s family and concerned villagers launched a widespread search across the union. The week-long effort came to an end when locals traced the livestock directly to the premises of Delwar Hossain, who serves as the General Secretary for Ward No. 3 of Bholakot Union BNP.
As crowds assembled around the residence, tempers flared, prompting Ramganj police to intervene before the situation escalated further. Officers dispersed the gathering, took custody of the cattle, and transferred it to the police station for official procedures.
Addressing the allegations, Delwar Hossain maintained his innocence and claimed he was the victim of a political setup. He stated that Taju, an official handling agricultural affairs for the BNP’s Nalchora Ward branch in neighbouring Bhatra Union, had brought the cow to his barn early three mornings prior. Hossain asserted that the animal was placed on his property without his full knowledge in a deliberate attempt to frame him.
The local political outfit has taken swift administrative action regarding the controversy. Abdur Rahim Mazumder, President of the Bholakot Union BNP and former Union Parishad Chairman, confirmed that a formal show-cause notice has been issued to Hossain in line with organisational regulations. The ward leader has been given three days to clarify his position in writing.
Police authorities are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the event. Firoz Uddin Chowdhury, Officer-in-Charge of Ramganj Police Station, confirmed that an active investigation is under way to establish how the stolen livestock ended up on the property and whether Hossain or other parties were directly complicit in the theft. Law enforcement officials assured that appropriate legal action will follow against anyone found responsible once the inquiry concludes.
