Suspect Detained For Attempted Child Abuse After Family Chase

A 35-year-old man has been arrested in the Jatrabari area of the capital for allegedly attempting to sexually assault an 11-year-old child. The suspect, identified as Mohammad Rubel, was cornered and detained by the victim’s family members following a dramatic pursuit, with timely assistance from on-duty traffic police officers. He was subsequently handed over to local station police for formal processing. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division confirmed the development on Saturday.

According to the DMP, citing officials from the Jatrabari traffic zone, Rubel was an acquaintance of the victim’s family, and they resided in the same neighbourhood. The incident transpired on Wednesday, 15 July, at approximately 9:00 pm. Rubel allegedly cornered the child inside the bathroom of a residence in the Mir Hazirbagh area of Jatrabari and attempted to assault her. Hearing the child’s distressed screams, neighbours and relatives rushed to the spot, causing Rubel to flee the scene immediately.

Following the disturbing encounter, the traumatised family began searching for the fugitive suspect across the neighbourhood. On Friday afternoon, at around 3:00 pm, relatives spotted Rubel near the busy Dholaipar roundabout and immediately gave chase.

Noticing the commotion, Sergeant Mohammad Abdullah-al-Nomani and Constable Nur Islam of the Wari Traffic Division intervened swiftly. The officers managed to intercept and detain Rubel before he could escape into the crowded market area. The traffic personnel then alerted Jatrabari Police Station, and a team arrived shortly after to take the suspect into custody.

The father of the victim has filed a formal case with Jatrabari Police Station under the relevant sections of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. The local administration confirmed that Rubel was officially shown arrested in connection with the case and forwarded to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon. Law enforcement authorities have assured the family that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure swift justice.
