Suspected Awami League Activist Detained at Dhanmondi 32

Law enforcement authorities have taken a 37-year-old man into custody from the Dhanmondi 32 area in the capital following suspicions of his affiliation with the Bangladesh Awami League. The individual, identified as Ornob Das, was apprehended on Saturday morning whilst attempting to pay homage at the site, which historically marks the home of the country’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Officers on duty promptly intercepted him before escorting him to the local police station in a police vehicle.

Confirming the arrest, the Officer-in-Charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, Imdadul Islam Tayeb, stated that the detention was carried out as part of heightened vigilance in the area. He confirmed that the suspect had been brought to the station primarily due to suspected political links with the Awami League, which has seen its public activities closely monitored following recent political developments across the nation.

Police officials elaborated that Ornob Das remains in police custody where his background, identity, and motives are currently being thoroughly scrutinised. Senior officers indicated that a final decision regarding any formal charges or legal proceedings will be determined once the initial verification process is fully concluded.

The incident took place amid stringent security measures enacted across the capital, particularly surrounding Dhanmondi 32 and adjacent neighbourhoods on 15 August. Security forces established extensive cordons, placing physical barricades across key access routes to restrict unauthorized movement and prevent potential unrest. Additional contingents from both the police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were deployed alongside plainclothes intelligence personnel to maintain order, conduct random searches, and ensure public safety throughout the day.
