Tamim Iqbal Calls Unexpected Press Briefing at Mirpur Stadium

In a sudden move that caught the domestic cricketing landscape off guard, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Tamim Iqbal called an urgent press conference on short notice on Thursday afternoon. The former national team opener is scheduled to address media representatives at 4:30 pm at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, according to an official press release issued by the governing body.

Although the board refrained from specifying a primary agenda in its initial announcement, sources within the administration suggest the session will address a range of pressing domestic issues. Chief amongst these expected developments is the formal unveiling of a brand-new corporate tournament set to expand the country’s domestic calendar.

The proposed competition, finalised earlier in the day, aims to feature six corporate houses as early as this year. Under the preliminary blueprint, the multi-format tournament will incorporate four-day fixtures, one-day matches, and Twenty20 games. This structure is designed to keep professional cricketers continuously engaged in high-intensity competitive action throughout the calendar year, addressing longstanding concerns regarding the lack of regular game time between traditional seasonal leagues.

Beyond the physical benefits on the field, the initiative places significant emphasis on improving player welfare and financial security. The financial framework envisions a shared compensation model: participating corporate sponsors will cover a portion of player salaries, with the BCB funding the remainder. Board officials intend to establish this competition as an annual fixture on the national circuit, rather than a one-off event.

Crucially, administrative sources confirmed that the introduction of this corporate venture will not disrupt existing domestic competitions. Established tournaments such as the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League and the National Cricket League are slated to continue alongside the new event. The domestic cricket community now awaits Tamim’s formal announcement to see whether these plans are officially ratified.
