Teenage Cricketer Dies by Suicide After Missing Team Selection

A 17-year-old aspiring cricketer has died by suicide in Nagpur, reportedly after becoming deeply distressed over repeated disappointment in securing a place in a cricket team, according to police. The incident took place in the Bajaj Nagar police station area of Nagpur, Maharashtra.

The teenager, identified as Aditi Choukhand, was a resident of Akola and was regarded by those around her as a talented young cricketer with ambitions of pursuing the sport at a higher level. Her death has once again highlighted the intense emotional pressure that young athletes can face when their hopes of selection do not materialise.

Aditi had been living in Nagpur with her mother and grandfather. Her father, a contractor associated with the Maharashtra government’s Public Works Department, lived in Akola. She had completed her higher secondary education earlier this year and was reportedly continuing to pursue her cricketing ambitions alongside her studies.

Police said Aditi regularly practised cricket with her brother, who was also involved in the sport. On Wednesday evening, she had dinner with her mother before returning to her room and closing the door. Her father and grandfather were reportedly away from home at the time, while her brother had travelled to another city to play cricket.

When Aditi did not respond, family members reportedly became concerned and discovered what had happened. Police were subsequently informed and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to investigators, Aditi left behind a note addressed to her brother. In it, she praised his cricketing ability and expressed her own long-held dream of becoming a successful cricketer. She also urged him to make their parents proud, while writing that she had been unable to secure a place in the team and was deeply disappointed.

Investigating officer Chetan Chauhan said the preliminary inquiry suggested that frustration over team selection may have played a role in the teenager’s decision. Police said Aditi had reportedly been waiting for an opportunity to be selected for the next level of competition and had become increasingly upset after failing to secure her place.

The exact circumstances behind her distress, including why she repeatedly missed out on selection, remain under investigation. Police are examining the matter to establish whether there were any other factors that may have contributed to the tragedy.

The incident has also raised wider concerns about the pressures faced by young athletes, for whom selection can often determine access to higher-level coaching and competitive opportunities. For teenagers seeking to build careers in sport, repeated rejection can be particularly difficult to cope with, making emotional support from families, coaches and sporting institutions an important part of their development.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case.
