Police in Gazipur have recovered the body of a 16-year-old female garment factory worker from her residence in the Jorun area under Konabari Police Station. The deceased, identified as Hasina Akter, was found hanging inside her rented room on Monday evening.
Hasina, daughter of Hasen Ali from Amgach Bilasi Tistapara village in Debiganj upazila, Panchagarh district, had been residing in Gazipur for approximately four years. She shared a rented corrugated tin-roofed room belonging to the late Babul Miah with her maternal aunt and uncle. To support herself and contribute to her family’s livelihood, she worked as an operative in a local ready-made garment (RMG) factory in the industrial hub.
According to family members and neighbours, Hasina had been feeling unwell and took two consecutive days off work to rest. On Monday afternoon, concerns arose when she failed to respond to repeated calls from relatives. At around 5:30 pm, finding her door locked securely from the inside, alarmed family members and neighbours gathered outside. After several failed attempts to contact her, locals broke open a window to inspect the interior, where they discovered her body hanging from a ceiling beam.
Local residents immediately notified the police. Officers from the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) arrived at the scene around 9:00 pm to retrieve the body and complete preliminary inquest procedures.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Konabari Police Station, Md. Iftekhar Hossain, confirmed the recovery. He stated that the body was subsequently sent to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for a full post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause of death.
“Police arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted by local residents and recovered the body,” said OC Iftekhar Hossain. “The precise circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation, and necessary legal procedures are currently underway.”
Industrial belts like Gazipur draw hundreds of thousands of young internal migrants from rural districts across Bangladesh. Many, like Hasina, leave home at a young age seeking employment in the nation’s vast textile sector. The local police have filed an unnatural death case while awaiting the official autopsy report to rule out foul play.
