Terrifying earthquake strikes Mexico, two dead

Mexico was shaken on Friday morning, 2 January, as a powerful earthquake struck the southern part of the country, resulting in two fatalities and several injuries. The tremor occurred during the nation’s first presidential press briefing of the new year, creating a moment of panic among journalists and officials alike.

President Claudia Sheinbaum was addressing reporters when the earthquake alert siren sounded abruptly. In the immediate aftermath, residents across affected regions rushed outdoors, seeking safety in open areas to avoid potential building collapses. Despite the shock, authorities reported that no major structural damage had been observed.

The earthquake, which struck at 07:58 local time, sent waves of fear across Mexico and briefly disrupted administrative operations. Residents of Mexico City and the popular Pacific coastal tourist city of Acapulco were particularly affected, evacuating homes and offices as a precaution.

According to Mexico’s National Seismological Service, the epicentre was located near San Marcos, in the southern state of Guerrero. This region lies close to Acapulco, one of the country’s most frequented tourist destinations. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake originated approximately 35 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface, in the hilly area northwest of Rancho Viejo, Guerrero.

Shortly after the tremor, President Sheinbaum resumed her briefing and reassured the public. She confirmed having spoken with Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado, who conveyed that, so far, no significant damage or loss of life had been reported beyond the initial casualties. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to remain vigilant.

The quake serves as a stark reminder of Mexico’s vulnerability to seismic activity, particularly in coastal and mountainous regions. Emergency services remain on high alert, prepared to respond to any unfolding incidents.
