A madrasa teacher has been arrested in Birampur, Dinajpur, after allegedly sexually assaulting three child students at a Hafizia madrasa. Following his arrest, the accused was produced before a court, where he reportedly gave a confessional statement concerning the allegations. He was subsequently sent to jail through a court order.
The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Friday at a Hafizia madrasa in Birampur upazila. The arrested teacher has been identified as Hasan Ali, 25, a resident of Nawabganj upazila in Dinajpur. He had been working as a teacher at the madrasa for about a year.
According to the case details, local residents detained Hasan Ali after allegations of sexual abuse involving three child students emerged. He was later handed over to the police. A case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act by the father of one of the alleged victims. Police subsequently arrested the teacher in connection with the case.
Hasan Ali was taken to the Dinajpur court on Friday afternoon. During proceedings before Senior Judicial Magistrate Zainul Abedin, he reportedly gave a confessional statement concerning the alleged sexual assault of the three children. Following the court proceedings, he was sent to jail.
The investigating officer, Birampur police station Sub-Inspector Sohel Rana, said the accused had admitted before the court to sexually assaulting the three children. He added that the investigation into the allegations was continuing and that a final report would be submitted to the court after the investigation is completed.
Additional allegations have also emerged following the teacher’s detention. A video of local residents questioning the accused after his detention reportedly shows him claiming that he had sexually assaulted seven students of the madrasa at different times. He also allegedly said that he had recorded videos of the incidents.
In the same questioning, the accused reportedly made a much wider claim, alleging that he had carried out similar acts involving between 200 and 250 students at different madrasas. These claims are serious but remain allegations at this stage and will need to be independently examined as part of the police investigation and judicial process.
The incident has caused concern in the local community, particularly because the alleged victims are children studying in a religious educational institution. Such institutions are expected to provide a safe environment for students, many of whom remain dependent on teachers and administrators for supervision and care.
The madrasa was established in 2020 and has reportedly operated with financial assistance from local donors and members of its management committee. According to a member of the management committee, the institution had previously employed another teacher, who left the position about two years after its establishment. Hasan Ali was subsequently appointed to the teaching post.
The alleged abuse has raised questions about student safeguarding, supervision and the mechanisms available for children to report inappropriate or abusive behaviour within educational institutions. Child protection specialists generally stress the importance of clear reporting procedures, responsible adult supervision and prompt action whenever allegations of abuse arise.
Police have said that the case remains under investigation. The evidence gathered during the investigation, including witness accounts and any other relevant material, will be assessed before the authorities submit their final report to the court. The accused will remain subject to the judicial process, while the allegations against him must ultimately be determined through the courts.
