A tragic incident in northern Bangladesh has left an entire community in mourning after three young children from the same family drowned in floodwater in Kulaura Upazila, within Moulvibazar District.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning (1 April) in the village of Fatikguli under Karmahda Union. Local residents reported that an early morning Kalbaishakhi storm brought heavy rain and strong winds, causing nearby agricultural fields to become inundated with rainwater. The sudden accumulation of water transformed low-lying farmland into dangerous pools.
According to eyewitness accounts, the three victims—who were cousins—went to play near their homes after the storm subsided. Around 1:30 p.m., they entered a waterlogged field close to their residence. Unaware of the hidden danger beneath the murky water, they reportedly stepped into a recently excavated and uneven section of land that had filled rapidly with rainwater.
The children were identified as Jisan Ahmed (12), Imad Ahmed (9), and Labib Ahmed (7). While playing, they lost balance and were quickly submerged. A passer-by noticed the incident and raised the alarm, prompting local residents to rush to the scene. The children were pulled from the water and taken immediately to a medical practitioner’s chamber at Robir Bazar, where a doctor confirmed that they had already died.
The incident has cast a deep shadow of grief over the village, with families and neighbours gathering in shock and sorrow. Local authorities from Kulaura Police Station confirmed the incident and stated that police reached the site shortly after receiving information.
Officers said that the bodies were recovered and taken into custody for necessary legal procedures and possible post-mortem examinations. However, they also noted that if the families do not file any complaint and obtain the required administrative approval, the bodies may be handed over without autopsy due to the sensitive and heartbreaking nature of the case.
| Name | Age | Relationship | Circumstance of Incident |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jisan Ahmed | 12 | Cousin | Drowned in flooded field |
| Imad Ahmed | 9 | Cousin | Drowned in flooded field |
| Labib Ahmed | 7 | Cousin | Drowned in flooded field |
Local residents described the tragedy as one of the most heartbreaking incidents in recent memory, emphasising how quickly routine playtime turned into disaster following the sudden storm and flooding. Community members have called for increased awareness of water safety in rural flood-prone areas, particularly during seasonal storms when open fields can become deceptively dangerous.
