Bangladesh secured a place in the final of the SAFF Under-20 Football Championship after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Nepal in the semi-final, thanks to a decisive first-half header from Mohammad Manik. Mark Cox’s side produced a disciplined and energetic performance, combining early attacking intent with resilient defensive organisation to seal their passage.

The win marks Bangladesh’s third appearance in the final of the competition at Under-20 level. They were runners-up in 2022, when they lost to India, before lifting the title in 2024 with a memorable victory over Nepal on their home soil. This latest triumph further strengthens their reputation as one of the region’s most consistent youth sides.

The match, held at the National Stadium in Malé, saw Bangladesh dominate the early exchanges. From the outset, they pressed high and repeatedly exploited both flanks, delivering a series of dangerous crosses that stretched the Nepalese defence. The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute when Morshed Ali delivered a precise cross from the right, which Mohammad Manik met with a powerful and well-placed header to open the scoring.

Nepal attempted an immediate response and thought they had equalised just a minute later when Ronan Sullivan finished clinically after beating two defenders. However, the goal was ruled out for offside. Despite Nepal’s efforts to regroup, Bangladesh’s defensive structure remained compact and difficult to penetrate.

Bangladesh continued to search for a second goal, with Ronan Sullivan once again involved in creative build-up play. In the 36th minute, a defence-splitting pass from Nazmul Huda set up an opportunity, but Nepal goalkeeper Pemba reacted quickly to smother the danger.

The second half saw a more cautious approach from Bangladesh, who focused on maintaining possession while remaining dangerous on the counter-attack. In the 52nd minute, goalscorer Manik was forced off due to injury and was replaced by Joya Ahmed. Bangladesh continued to press forward, although Nazmul failed to convert a promising chance in the 56th minute.

Late in the match, Nepal intensified their attacking pressure, particularly in the final 15 minutes, but Bangladesh’s backline held firm under sustained pressure. In the 87th minute, a notable moment arrived with the introduction of Declan Sullivan, brother of Ronan Sullivan and a UK-based footballer of Bangladeshi origin, making his debut for the national youth side.

Despite Nepal’s late surge, Bangladesh maintained their composure. In stoppage time, they missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead when Suman Soren failed to convert a one-on-one chance after a well-timed pass from Declan Sullivan.
