More than two months after the conclusion of the latest Big Bash League (BBL) season on 25 January, Bangladesh’s emerging leg-spinner Rishad Hossain has received a significant accolade recognising his impressive debut campaign in Australian domestic cricket. The young spinner, who represented the Hobart Hurricanes for the first time, has been named the club’s Player of the Season by Cricket Tasmania at its annual awards ceremony.
Rishad’s recognition is a testament to both his consistency and impact throughout the tournament. Despite being new to the BBL environment—widely regarded as one of the most competitive T20 leagues in the world—he quickly adapted to conditions and established himself as a key figure in the Hurricanes’ bowling attack. His ability to maintain control while taking crucial wickets proved invaluable to his side.
Over the course of the tournament, Rishad claimed 15 wickets, making him the leading wicket-taker for the Hurricanes. Notably, no spinner across all participating teams managed to surpass his tally, underlining his effectiveness in a format often dominated by pace bowlers. His economy rate of 7.82 further highlights his discipline, as he consistently restricted opposition batters while operating in high-pressure situations.
Rishad’s performance placed him alongside other standout spinners in the competition, including Cooper Connolly of the Perth Scorchers and Lloyd Pope of the Adelaide Strikers, both of whom also finished with 15 wickets. However, it was Rishad’s overall influence and match-winning contributions that set him apart.
The following table summarises key performances among leading contenders:
| Player Name | Team | Wickets | Economy Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rishad Hossain | Hobart Hurricanes | 15 | 7.82 |
| Cooper Connolly | Perth Scorchers | 15 | ~8.00+ |
| Lloyd Pope | Adelaide Strikers | 15 | ~8.00+ |
| Nathan Ellis | Hobart Hurricanes | 14 | — |
| Chris Jordan | Hobart Hurricanes | 7 | — |
In the race for the Hurricanes’ top individual honour, Rishad faced strong competition from teammates. Batter Nikhil Chaudhary enjoyed a productive season with the bat, scoring 307 runs, while captain Nathan Ellis impressed with 14 wickets. Experienced seamer Chris Jordan was also among the nominees. Nevertheless, Rishad’s all-round bowling excellence ultimately earned him the distinction.
In the women’s category, the award was claimed by Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who delivered a remarkable season with the bat, amassing 432 runs. Her contributions were instrumental in guiding her side to their maiden title, marking a historic achievement for the team.
Cricket Tasmania’s annual awards celebrate excellence across multiple categories, recognising players who have made significant contributions over the season. Rishad Hossain’s success not only highlights his individual talent but also reflects the growing presence and impact of Bangladeshi cricketers on the global T20 stage.
