Three Die as Measles Cases Continue to Rise

Bangladesh recorded three deaths from suspected measles and 1,218 new infections over the past 24 hours, reflecting the continued spread of the disease across the country.

The latest figures were released on Friday (7 August) in a press statement issued by the Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to the health authority, 1,017 people were identified as suspected measles patients during the past day, while laboratory testing confirmed 201 new cases. Since 15 March, the cumulative number of suspected measles cases has reached 134,655, highlighting the sustained burden of the outbreak on the country’s healthcare system.

The DGHS also reported that the total number of laboratory-confirmed measles infections has climbed to 16,941 during the same period. While confirmed cases account for only a portion of the overall suspected infections, the figures indicate that measles continues to circulate in many parts of the country.

Hospital admissions remain high. From 15 March to 7 August, a total of 116,822 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals for treatment. During the same period, 112,525 patients recovered and were discharged, suggesting that the majority of those requiring medical care have responded to treatment.

The latest update also highlighted the human cost of the outbreak. Three people died from suspected measles in the past 24 hours. Since 15 March, suspected measles has been linked to the deaths of 767 children nationwide. No deaths from laboratory-confirmed measles were recorded during the latest reporting period. However, the cumulative number of confirmed measles-related deaths has reached 96.

Health experts have consistently warned that measles is one of the world’s most contagious viral diseases, spreading rapidly among unvaccinated populations. Young children remain particularly vulnerable to severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis and, in some cases, death. Early diagnosis, timely medical treatment and complete immunisation are regarded as the most effective measures to reduce transmission and prevent serious illness.

The continued rise in suspected infections and the significant number of hospital admissions underline the ongoing public health challenge posed by the outbreak. Health authorities have urged parents and guardians to ensure eligible children receive routine measles vaccinations and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as fever, rash, cough or red eyes develop.
