Three Killed as Passenger Bus Crashes into Parked Lorry in Rangpur

Three people were killed and several others injured when a passenger bus crashed into the rear of a soil-laden lorry parked beside the Dhaka–Rangpur Highway in Mithapukur, Rangpur, early on Wednesday.

The accident occurred at around 6 am on 28 October in the Bairagiganj area of Mithapukur upazila. Police were unable to establish the identities of the deceased immediately after the incident.

According to police and local residents, the lorry was parked in front of a shrine mosque opposite Shah Amanat petrol station in Bairagiganj after the Fajr prayers. At around 6 am, a passenger bus operated by Khan Enterprise, travelling from Dhaka to Bhurungamari in Kurigram district, struck the back of the stationary vehicle.

One person died at the scene due to the impact of the collision. Several other passengers sustained injuries, prompting a joint rescue operation involving police officers, Fire Service personnel and local residents.

The injured passengers were rescued from the bus and taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for treatment. Two more people subsequently died at the hospital, bringing the total death toll to three.

Moazzem Uddin, officer-in-charge of the Baradarga Highway Police Station, confirmed the casualties. He said the injured had been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, while the identities of those killed had yet to be established.

The collision also disrupted traffic on the busy Dhaka–Rangpur Highway. However, the obstruction was cleared and normal traffic movement resumed within approximately 30 minutes, according to the police officer.

Legal procedures are under way in connection with the incident. The authorities have not yet provided further details about the precise circumstances that led to the collision.

The crash once again highlights the risks posed by collisions involving stationary vehicles on major roads. Vehicles parked along highways can create hazards for approaching traffic, particularly during the early morning hours when visibility may be reduced. Driver alertness, appropriate parking arrangements and adequate roadside safety measures are important in reducing such risks.

However, the specific cause of Wednesday’s accident has not been established, and further information from the authorities would be needed to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
