Three People, Including Awami League Leader, Murdered in Sylhet

Three people, including a local Awami League leader, his wife and their domestic worker, have been found dead with their throats cut inside a residence in Sylhet city’s Raynagar Mitali Residential Area.

The victims were identified as local Awami League leader Abdus Sattar, his wife and their domestic worker. Police recovered their blood-stained bodies from House No. 111 in the residential area on Wednesday morning (12 August).

Local residents reportedly noticed the bodies at around 9am and informed the police. The discovery triggered alarm across the neighbourhood, with a large number of people gathering outside the house as news of the killings spread.

Nazmul Haque Nazu, general secretary of the Mitali Residential Area, confirmed the incident and said residents were shocked after learning about the killings. The authorities were informed immediately, he said.

Police officers from the local station reached the scene shortly after receiving the report. Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police Bureau of Investigation also attended the property, where crime-scene personnel began collecting evidence.

According to the preliminary assessment, the attackers may have entered the walled residence at some point on Tuesday night (11 August). The three victims are believed to have been killed inside the house before the assailants fled. Investigators are examining whether the victims had sustained injuries apart from the fatal wounds to their throats.

The circumstances surrounding the killings remain unclear. Police have not yet established whether the incident was linked to previous enmity, political rivalry, robbery or another motive. Investigators are examining several possibilities rather than drawing a conclusion at this early stage.

Abdus Sattar was known locally as an Awami League leader. The fact that three people were killed inside the same residence has heightened concern among residents of Raynagar and the surrounding Mitali Residential Area.

Additional police personnel have been deployed around the property to maintain order and prevent the gathering crowd from disrupting the investigation. Officers are also working to preserve the crime scene while forensic evidence is collected.

Mohammad Saiful Islam, deputy commissioner of the northern division of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said preparations were under way to send the bodies to the mortuary of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

The post-mortem examinations are expected to help investigators establish the nature and extent of the injuries and provide further evidence concerning the circumstances of the deaths.

Police have meanwhile launched an investigation and formed several teams to identify and apprehend those responsible. Investigators are expected to examine physical evidence from the house and other information gathered during the initial inquiry as they work to establish how the attackers entered the property, when the killings took place and what prompted the violence.

No suspect has been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the killings so far. The motive also remains officially unconfirmed as the investigation continues.
