Royal Challengers Bengaluru batsman Tim David has received a one-match suspension for the opening fixture of the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season following a breach of the tournament’s code of conduct during the 2026 final. Alongside the suspension, the player has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee and assessed two demerit points.
The disciplinary action stems from an incident that occurred on Sunday during the IPL 2026 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans. In the 10th over of the first innings, David expressed his frustration towards umpire Nitin Menon by throwing an ice bag at him.
Consequently, David was found guilty of committing a Level 1 offence under the IPL Code of Conduct. According to Article 2.9 of the code, throwing a ball or cricket equipment (such as a water bottle) at or near a player, team official, umpire, match referee, or any other person in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during a match constitutes a punishable infraction.
This incident marked David’s third Level 1 offence of the 2026 IPL season. The cricketer had previously accumulated demerit points from two separate matches earlier in the tournament.
Match 20: Received one demerit point for his first Level 1 offence of the season.
Match 54: Assessed two additional demerit points for a second Level 1 offence.
The Final: Awarded two more demerit points, bringing his seasonal total to five.
Under the IPL disciplinary framework, reaching a threshold of five demerit points triggers an automatic one-match ban.

As a result of reaching five demerit points, David must serve his one-match ban at the start of the next cycle.
