A playful exchange between two acquaintances escalated into a fatal assault late on Wednesday evening at Alamdanga in Chuadanga district, leaving a 23-year-old man dead and sending shockwaves through the local community.
The victim, identified as Imdadul Haq, son of Rezaul Karim from Naoda Bondbil village in Alamdanga upazila, was severely beaten with a wooden stick following a trivial altercation. Police quickly launched an operation following the incident and detained the prime suspect, 25-year-old Nice Khondokar, a fellow resident of the same village and son of the late Majnu Khondokar.
According to local residents and eye-witnesses, Imdadul and Nice shared a long-standing friendship and were accustomed to light-hearted banter. The tragic turn of events unfolded at around 9:30 pm on 14 October near a tea stall at the new bus stand area in Gobindapur village under Alamdanga municipality. What began as informal joking at the stall rapidly degenerated into a heated argument between the two young men.
Seeking to resolve the dispute, Imdadul walked towards Nice’s home to report the behavior to his mother. Incensed by this move, Nice pursued Imdadul armed with a wooden stick. As Imdadul attempted to flee the scene, he lost his balance and fell to the ground. Taking advantage of the fall, Nice struck him repeatedly on the head with the stick, inflicting critical severe head injuries.
Onlookers rushed to Imdadul’s aid and immediately transported him to a nearby private clinic for emergency first aid. However, as his condition deteriorated rapidly, medical staff advised an urgent transfer to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for specialized care. Imdadul succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
The incident has cast a heavy shadow of grief over Naoda Bondbil village. A neighbor, Uzzal Hossain, revealed that Imdadul had been actively preparing to migrate abroad for employment. Having traveled to Dhaka to arrange his overseas journey, he had returned home only the previous night after his scheduled flight faced a sudden delay.
Confirming the arrest, Rakibul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Alamdanga Police Station, stated that law enforcement officers conducted a prompt drive immediately after the assault to apprehend the suspect. The body of the deceased is being sent to the morgue at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital for an autopsy. The victim’s family is currently preparing to file a formal murder case, and legal proceedings against the detained suspect are underway.
