Two young men have been arrested with 80 yaba tablets during an operation by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Manikganj Sadar upazila. Police estimated the value of the seized tablets at around Tk 24,000.
The arrests were made at about 1.50am on Wednesday (7 October) on a paved road in the Chandra area of Manikganj Sadar, in front of Halim Traders near Colonel Maleque Medical College.
The arrested men have been identified as Md Sayan Hossain, 30, son of Md Mojibur Rahman of Panchankhara village in Sadar upazila, and Sifat Ahmed, 20, son of Lavlu Mia of Bajeyapt Bhatra village.
According to the DB police, the operation was carried out under the direction of Manikganj Police Superintendent Mohammad Sarwar Alam, BPM-Seba. It was conducted under the supervision of DB Inspector and in-charge Manabendra Balo, with Sub-Inspector Md Ataur Rahman leading the operation.
Police said they recovered 40 yaba tablets from Sayan Hossain and another 40 from Sifat Ahmed during the operation. The tablets were subsequently seized as evidence.
Yaba, a tablet containing methamphetamine, is an illicit drug whose distribution and possession are punishable under Bangladesh’s narcotics laws. Law enforcement agencies regularly conduct operations against suspected drug trafficking and possession in different parts of the country.
The latest operation took place during the early hours of the morning, when police teams were conducting checks in the area. The DB said the two men were taken into custody after the tablets were recovered from them.
Police have not provided further details about where the tablets were allegedly obtained or whether they were intended for distribution elsewhere. Such details may emerge during the subsequent investigation.
The DB said a case under the Narcotics Control Act was in the process of being filed with Manikganj Sadar Police Station in connection with the arrests. The seized tablets will be kept as part of the case evidence, while the investigation will seek to establish the circumstances surrounding their possession.
The arrests are part of ongoing law enforcement efforts to curb the circulation of illicit drugs. Police operations targeting narcotics possession and supply are conducted across different areas as authorities seek to prevent the spread of drug-related activities.
The two suspects are expected to be dealt with through the legal process following the filing of the case.
