Two Chhatra League Leaders Arrested in Kasba

Police have arrested two leaders of Chhatra League’s college units in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria. The arrests were made during separate special operations in two areas of the upazila on Saturday night (29 August).

The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Saimun Chowdhury, 31, joint general secretary of the Chhatra League unit at Kasba T. Ali College, and Md Azmir Haque, 32, president of the organisation’s unit at Chargach N.I. Bhuiyan Degree College.

Saimun is the son of the late Abdul Quddus of Shahpur village in Kasba, while Azmir is the son of Md Anwar Hossain of Chargach village.

According to police sources, officers first conducted an operation at Kasba T. Ali intersection at around 7.30pm on Saturday after receiving confidential information. Azmir Haque was arrested during that operation.

A separate operation was then carried out at Kasba New Market at around 8.35pm, where police arrested Saimun Chowdhury.

The district police confirmed the arrests in a media statement issued late on Saturday night. The statement said the two men had been taken into custody during separate operations conducted in the upazila.

Kasba police said the necessary legal procedures against the arrested individuals were under way. However, the police statement did not provide details of the specific allegations or cases connected to their arrests.

The lack of details in the police statement means that the exact circumstances leading to the arrests remain unclear. No further information about the allegations against the two men was immediately disclosed by the authorities.

Both individuals held organisational positions in college-level Chhatra League units in Kasba. Their arrests took place within an hour of each other and at two separate locations, according to the police account.

Authorities are expected to proceed with the relevant legal formalities following the arrests. Further details regarding any case, allegation or subsequent court proceedings will depend on the information formally provided by the police and other concerned authorities.
