Two Dead and Twenty Injured in Habiganj Head-On Bus Crash

A horrific head-on collision between two passenger buses on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway has left two people dead, including a driver, and at least twenty others injured. The tragic accident occurred on Wednesday, 8 July, at around 5:00 am near the Akij Venture Company premises in the Dubaoi Bazar area of Habiganj’s Bahubal upazila.

One of the deceased was identified as Tajul Islam, 50, the driver of the Unique Paribahan bus. A resident of Katiadi upazila in Kishoreganj, Islam died on the spot. The second victim succumbed to severe injuries after being rushed to hospital. Authorities are still working to establish their identity.

Police and local sources reported that a Dhaka-bound Unique Paribahan bus arriving from Sylhet collided directly with a Sylhet-bound Lucky Paribahan bus at Dubaoi Bazar. The impact was devastating. The Unique Paribahan bus careened out of control, veering off the highway into a roadside ditch. Meanwhile, the front section of the Lucky Paribahan bus was left completely mangled.

The dawn crash drew immediate responses from local residents, who rushed to the scene to assist. Shortly afterwards, teams from the Bahubal Fire Service and the Shayestaganj Highway Police arrived to initiate a coordinated rescue operation. Together, they extricated trapped passengers from the wreckage. The injured, including the driver of the Lucky Paribahan bus, were transported to Bahubal Upazila Health Complex and various nearby medical centres for treatment.

The collision caused severe traffic gridlock, paralyzing vehicular movement on the vital Dhaka-Sylhet highway for nearly two hours. Commuters faced significant delays before the Shayestaganj Highway Police and fire service personnel deployed wreckers to clear the damaged vehicles from the road. Traffic flow returned to normal around 7:00 am.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Billal Hossain of the Shayestaganj Highway Police confirmed the details from the site. He stated that while one driver died instantly, a second casualty was recorded at the hospital. Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the crash.
