A horrific collision between a heavy goods lorry and a motorcycle claimed two lives along the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Highway on Wednesday morning. The fatal incident occurred at around 10:00 am on 12 August in the Keruntali area under Teknaf Upazila, casting a pall of gloom over the victims’ families and local communities.
The deceased have been identified as 35-year-old Md Rubel, son of the late Sagir Ahmad Driver from the West Farirbil area of Palongkhali Union in Ukhia Upazila, and 28-year-old Mohammad Arman Chowdhury, son of Abul Kashem from the Ghilatali area of Hnila-Whykong Union in Teknaf Upazila.
According to police officers and eyewitnesses, Rubel and Arman were travelling together on a single motorcycle heading towards Palongkhali in Ukhia. As they reached the Keruntali stretch of the highway, a speeding lorry coming from the opposite direction struck their motorcycle head-on. The violence of the impact threw both men onto the tarmac.
Rubel suffered catastrophic injuries and died instantly at the scene before medical help could arrive. Arman sustained critical head and bodily trauma and lay unconscious on the road. Concerned local residents rushed to the spot, carefully recovered Arman, and immediately transported him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission.
Highways police arrived at the crash site soon after receiving news of the fatality to clear the wreckage and restore the flow of traffic along the busy arterial route. Nurul Absar, Officer-in-Charge of the Whykong Highway Police Station, stated that the driver of the lorry fled the scene in the vehicle immediately after the accident. However, highway police officers subsequently identified and seized the vehicle as part of an ongoing police investigation. Legal proceedings regarding the tragic road crash are currently underway.
