Two Killed as Bus Crashes into Stationary Lorry in Sherpur

Two passengers were killed and five others injured after a passenger bus crashed into the rear of a stationary lorry on the Dhaka-Bogura Highway in Sherpur upazila of Bogura district.

The accident occurred at around 11.30pm on Sunday, 2 August, in the Chhonka area of the highway’s Dhaka-bound lane. The collision took place when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus struck the back of a lorry that had been stopped on the same side of the road.

The deceased were identified as Masudur Rahman, 38, son of Abdul Gafur of Chankuri village in Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon district, and Nayan, 38, son of Osman Ali of Jahanpur village in the same upazila.

According to Sherpur Highway Police, the lorry, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-Ta-18-2185, was stationary in the Dhaka-bound lane. A passenger bus, registered as Dhaka Metro-Ba-12-5455, was travelling towards Dhaka when it reportedly hit the rear of the lorry at high speed.

The impact left at least seven bus passengers injured. Local residents helped rescue those trapped or seriously injured following the crash. Two of the victims, who were in critical condition, were taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Doctors on duty later declared them dead.

The other five injured passengers were receiving medical treatment at the time of the report. Their identities and the extent of their injuries were not immediately disclosed.

The collision briefly disrupted traffic on the busy Dhaka-Bogura Highway, causing difficulties for vehicles travelling through the area at night. Highway police officers quickly reached the scene, managed the situation and took steps to restore the normal flow of traffic.

The accident once again highlights the risks posed by vehicles stopping on major highways, particularly at night when visibility is reduced and approaching drivers may have less time to react. High-speed traffic on major inter-district routes can make such collisions especially severe when a stationary vehicle remains in a live lane.

A senior officer at the Sherpur Highway Police outpost said officers went to both the accident site and the hospital after receiving information about the crash. Police completed the necessary legal procedures concerning the deaths and the accident.

Following the completion of the required formalities, the bodies of the two deceased passengers were handed over to their relatives for burial.

Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including why the lorry was stationary in the Dhaka-bound lane and whether speed, visibility or other road conditions contributed to the collision.
