Two people were injured in separate shooting incidents in Dhaka on Saturday night, with a businessman attacked inside his shop in Shani Akhra and a woman shot through the open window of her home in Darus Salam.
The first incident occurred at around 8pm on Zia Smarani Road in the Shani Akhra area. According to relatives, businessman Aslam Khan was inside his crockery shop and speaking with a customer when an unidentified man suddenly entered the premises and opened fire at him.
The attacker fled immediately after the shooting. Aslam was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said a businessman who had sustained gunshot injuries in the Kadamtali area was receiving treatment at the hospital. He added that Kadamtali police had been informed about the incident.
Police are preparing to file a case over the shooting. The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identity of the gunman and the motive, were not immediately known.
In a separate incident later that night, a woman was shot while watching television inside her tin-roofed home in the Darus Salam area of the capital.
The incident took place at around 8.30pm in the Matborbari Mosque Lane area under Darus Salam Police Station. The woman, identified as Jesmin Akter, was sitting inside her home with an open window when unidentified assailants reportedly fired a shot through it before fleeing.
According to her son, Yasin, his mother had left the window open while watching television. The bullet struck her right hand, causing serious injury, and she fell to the ground.
Family members later arranged for her to be taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She was brought to the hospital’s emergency department at around 10.45pm and admitted for treatment. Inspector Mohammad Faruk confirmed that Jesmin had been injured in the shooting.
Jesmin Begum’s family home is in Uttar Dalla village under Nabinagar Police Station in Brahmanbaria district. Her husband’s name is Abdul Mannan.
The two incidents occurred within a short distance of the capital’s densely populated residential and commercial areas, but there is no indication from the information available that the shootings were connected. Police have yet to disclose whether any suspects have been identified or detained.
The incidents have also highlighted the vulnerability of people in both commercial and residential settings. In one case, the attacker entered a business premises and fired at the owner at close range; in the other, a shot was fired into a home through an open window.
Further details about the victims’ conditions, the motive behind either attack and any arrests were not immediately available. Police are expected to investigate the circumstances of both incidents as part of the cases being prepared.
