Four months after a controversial Champions League officiating decision, Barcelona have secured a moral victory following clear new guidelines issued by UEFA. European football’s governing body has issued definitive instructions to referees regarding handball incidents inside the penalty area.
Under the updated directive, if an outfield player deliberately handles the ball within their own penalty box while the ball remains in play, referees are required to award a penalty. UEFA clarified that officials must no longer rely on personal interpretations or so-called “common sense” when handling such incidents, eliminating room for subjective discretion.
The directive follows a high-profile controversy during the Champions League quarter-final first leg between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid on 8 April 2026.
During the match, Atlético goalkeeper Juan Musso took a goal kick, passing the ball to defender Marc Pubill. While the ball was actively in play, Pubill stopped it with his hand inside his own penalty box. Despite the clear infraction, lead referee István Kovács declined to award a penalty, and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) failed to intervene or recommend an on-field review.
Barcelona subsequently lodged a formal complaint demanding an official acknowledgment of the officiating error. At the time of the incident, Barcelona trailed 0–1 against Atlético Madrid. The Catalan side eventually suffered a 0–2 defeat in the match and were subsequently eliminated from the competition on aggregate, missing out on a place in the Champions League semi-finals.
