Unidentified Woman Dies After Autorickshaw Collision in Netrokona

An unidentified woman was killed after being struck by a battery-powered autorickshaw in Durgapur, Netrokona, on Monday evening, 26 October. The accident occurred at Dakhinail crossroads on the Birishiri road. Police recovered the woman’s body from the scene and seized the vehicle involved in the collision. The driver reportedly fled after the incident, prompting officers to launch efforts to identify and apprehend him.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the autorickshaw was carrying passengers from the Dewtukon area along the Netrokona–Durgapur road towards Birishiri. When it reached the Dakhinail junction in Birishiri Union, the vehicle struck a woman who was walking along the road. She sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The driver allegedly abandoned the autorickshaw and fled immediately after the collision. Local residents subsequently alerted the police, who arrived at the scene, recovered the body and took the seized vehicle to Durgapur Police Station for further investigation.

The woman’s identity could not be established immediately. As a result, the authorities have been unable to contact her family or inform her relatives of her death. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has been notified to assist in identifying the deceased.

Khandaker Shaker Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Durgapur Police Station, confirmed that the PBI had been informed about the case. He said the autorickshaw had been taken to the police station and that efforts were under way to identify and arrest the driver.

The precise circumstances surrounding the collision have not yet been established. Further investigation will be needed to determine how the accident occurred and whether any additional factors contributed to the woman’s death. Police have not released further details about the vehicle’s speed or the conditions on the road at the time of the incident.

Battery-powered autorickshaws are widely used for short-distance travel across Bangladesh, particularly in towns and rural areas where they provide an accessible means of transport. However, accidents involving these vehicles can pose serious risks to pedestrians, especially at road junctions and busy intersections. Careful driving, appropriate speed and greater awareness of pedestrians are essential to improving road safety.

The immediate priorities in this case are to establish the woman’s identity, notify her family and bring the driver before the law. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details may emerge as police continue their enquiries.
