The United States diplomatic mission in Iraq has issued an urgent directive advising all American citizens to leave the country immediately, amid a rapidly deteriorating security environment and heightened fears of further attacks targeting Western interests.

In a newly released security advisory, the US Embassy in Iraq stated that Iran-aligned armed factions have intensified operations across Iraq, with particular concentration in the Kurdistan Region. According to the alert, these groups have carried out, and are expected to continue, what it described as “extensive” attacks against US nationals and assets associated with the United States.

The advisory underscores a significant escalation in risk, noting that both civilian and diplomatic sites may be exposed to indirect fire, drone strikes, and missile attacks. The security environment has been further complicated by the unpredictable nature of recent hostilities, which have extended across multiple regions of the country.

US authorities have explicitly instructed citizens to avoid all travel to diplomatic facilities, including the embassy in Baghdad and the consulate general in Erbil. These installations remain on heightened alert, but officials have warned that movement to or from these sites could place individuals at severe risk.

The warning also highlights the possibility of aerial threats, including rockets, drones, and missile strikes across Iraqi airspace. In light of these dangers, commercial air travel has become increasingly unreliable or unavailable, prompting authorities to recommend immediate evacuation via overland routes.

Citizens seeking to depart Iraq are being advised to travel through neighbouring countries using land borders. The guidance specifically identifies routes into Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey as the most viable evacuation options under current conditions.

Security analysts note that the advisory reflects broader regional instability, where overlapping political and military tensions have created an unpredictable operational environment for foreign nationals. Iraq, already sensitive due to internal divisions and external influences, now faces renewed concerns over spillover effects from regional conflicts.

The US Embassy emphasised that all non-essential movement should be avoided and that citizens remaining in the country must maintain extreme vigilance, minimise exposure in public spaces, and prepare contingency plans for rapid evacuation if conditions worsen further.

The situation continues to evolve, and diplomatic officials are closely monitoring developments, with further updates expected should the security landscape change.
