Police in Kalapara, Patuakhali, have arrested three individuals, including a local volunteer group leader, over allegations of extortion, assault, and looting targeting fishermen. The arrests came after repeated complaints from victims in the area, highlighting concerns over public safety and abuse of authority.
The operation took place on Sunday, 1 March, in the Ukil Potti neighbourhood of Kalapara municipality. The principal accused, Suman Fakir, serves as the convener of the Nilganj Union Volunteer Group. His two accomplices, Sajib Fakir and Md. Rasel, were also taken into custody.
Police stated that the action was prompted by a formal complaint filed by local fisherman Chan Mia Gazi, a resident of Nilganj Union, who has been earning his livelihood through fishing in government-owned canals for many years. According to his complaint, Suman Fakir and his associates had recently demanded Tk 250,000 from him for the right to fish in the local water bodies.
The situation escalated on Saturday, 28 February, at approximately 11 pm, when the accused allegedly arrived at Chan Mia’s home armed with weapons to collect the extortion money. When he refused to comply, they reportedly physically assaulted him and pushed him into the canal. In the process, his daughter, who tried to intervene, was allegedly physically abused and subjected to sexual harassment, according to the complaint.
Chan Mia told reporters that the gang had previously extorted Tk 50,000 from him under threats and intimidation. Unable to endure the repeated violence, he sought legal recourse. He also claimed that the accused attempted to block his path to the police station when he went to file the complaint, though local leaders from the Upazila BNP reportedly supported him during the ordeal.
The Officer-in-Charge of Kalapara Police Station, Rabul Islam, confirmed the arrests, noting that the three are now facing formal charges for extortion and assault. He added that legal proceedings are underway, and the police remain vigilant in their efforts to curb crime and protect local residents.
