Wasim Khan to Leave ICC Role

Former Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Wasim Khan has announced that he will step down from his position as General Manager at the International Cricket Council (ICC) after nearly four years in the role.

Wasim Khan joined the ICC in 2022 following the appointment of Geoff Allardice as Chief Executive. At the ICC, Khan held a senior operational leadership role during a period marked by rapid structural changes in global cricket, including the expansion of franchise-based tournaments and increasing pressure on the international calendar.

Prior to his ICC tenure, Khan served as Chief Executive Officer of the Pakistan Cricket Board for approximately three years, where he was involved in administrative reforms and strategic planning. His experience in cricket administration also includes a significant stint in English domestic cricket, where he worked as Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

Khan’s playing career preceded his administrative journey. A left-handed batter, he was among the early British Muslim cricketers to feature in English county cricket. He represented Warwickshire, Sussex, and Derbyshire during the late 1990s, playing 58 first-class matches and 30 List A games. One of the highlights of his playing days came during Warwickshire’s 1995 County Championship-winning campaign, when he averaged close to 50 with the bat.

During his time at the ICC, Khan was involved in addressing key structural challenges facing the sport, particularly the congestion of fixtures caused by the growth of domestic T20 leagues. He also contributed to the development of the 2023–2027 Future Tours Programme, which sought to rebalance international scheduling and increase the number of fixtures for member nations. Notably, his tenure also saw the introduction of a dedicated Future Tours Programme for women’s international cricket for the first time, marking a significant step in the sport’s gender equity framework.

Khan is expected to leave his ICC role in June, before taking up a new appointment in July, although details of his next position have not yet been publicly disclosed.

His departure comes amid a period of notable transition within the ICC leadership structure, with several senior figures stepping down in recent years. These include former Chief Executive Geoff Allardice, former Head of Events Chris Tetley, and former Anti-Corruption Unit General Manager Alex Marshall. Their respective successors have already been appointed as part of an ongoing restructuring process aimed at modernising global cricket governance.
